Attendance and Varsity Lettering Policy
Varsity Letter Requirements
1) Have 10 or fewer absences for practice.
2) Have 2 or fewer absences for meets.
P.E. Exemption Requirements
1) Have 15 or fewer absences for practice.
2) Have 3 or fewer absences for meets.
Practices:
There are no excused absences for practices. Swimmers/divers are either at practice or not at practice. However, swimmers/divers are encouraged to let the coaches know when and why they won’t be there.
o The only exception to the Attendance Policy is club swimmers/divers. Club swimmers/divers can continue to train with their club team, but the coaches will be reaching out to club coaches to confirm attendance. Club swimmers/divers are expected to put in as much time if not more.
Use your 10 absences wisely. Be careful to budget them. Chances are you will get sick at some point during the season or you will have a conflict due to other school or non-school related activities. Make- up practices will be offered throughout the season and if you attend, you can earn back 1 practice credit per practice. Some examples of optional days include teacher workdays, 2 over Thanksgiving Break, 4 over Winter Break, finals days etc… (There are typically 10 optional practices offered throughout the season.)
Attendance is posted on the team website at the end of each week. Swimmers/divers are responsible for checking their attendance within two weeks of when it is posted to ensure that no mistakes have been made. Click here to view your attendance status.
0 = Present/Excused Absence 1 = Unexcused Absence
Examples of absences include, but are not limited to the following: club meetings, work, make-up tests, other sport commitments, band/chorus concerts, banquets, birthdays, college visits, family vacations, illness, etc…
Meets:
There are no excused absences for meets. Swimmers/divers are either at the meet or not at the meet.
Use your 2 absences wisely. Attendance will be taken at the beginning and the end of the meet as you expected to stay the duration of it.
Community Clean Up: DHS, plans to offer 1 community clean-up project per semester. This might be at the school or out in the community. Attending one of these dates, would make up 1 missed meet.
Examples of absences include, but are not limited to the following: club meetings, work, make-up tests, other sport commitments, band/chorus concerts, banquets, birthdays, college visits, family vacations, illness, etc…
Disclaimer:
As coaches, we understand that our athletes have a lot going on outside of Swim & Dive. We want to support our athletes in all that they do, but it is also important that we hold up the value and integrity of the Varsity Letter and what it means to earn one. A Varsity Letter is earned by time spent in the pool and put into the season. The coaches don’t think any less of an athlete that does not letter, as all athletes are a valuable member to the team. All athletes can join the team and are welcomed members to the team! Just not all athletes will earn a Varsity Letter.
**All divers please contact Coach Molly in regards to your attendance**
